I found myself looking at 8300 rpm V8's today.

Kinja'd!!!

I just can't get the scream of that thing out of my head from the test drive.

It is practical, rwd, with 4 seats a big trunk and it has a V-8. If you have the means then there really is no reason not to. Unless you consider fuel economy, tires, and maintenance but that is standard affair with pretty much most German cars. Oh and a BMW V-8 close to redline is a sound I would probably contemplate killing for.

I have always felt driving german cars is worth the extra maintenance costs. And the S65 is a very robust motor. The only real issue I have is the mileage. I do a lot of commute miles.

But it would be an excuse to split commute miles to work with my road bike.

With proper maintenance and care they can be reliable. The only issues my family has had from them is because of my fathers right foot causing the car to eat through 4 sets of tires, then again that isn't really an issue when you have the tire insurance.

They are pretty great cars. I found the V8 in my E39 M5 to be perfect, but I am a real stickler for maintenance. I have several friends with that generation M3, with up to 100k miles or so, and have yet to hear anything bad on the motors. (I do know someone that needed a $5k DCT repair at about 50k miles.)

Assuming you're not looking at new, the only thing to keep in mind is that you should budget for maintenance on a $70k car no matter what you pay for the used car (and, of course, if you pay very little with no warranty budget for corrective).

Four days ago I reset the engine and transmission adaptations on the 4.8L V8, and I've already improved the smoothness and the MPGs and had a couple friends take it for wow drives. Since Saturday, I've managed 20 mpg, and I know that it can do better, and know that when you put your foot down it's fucking ridiculously faster than anyone around here is able to react.

The one I have, anyway, is like like bored under 2000 rpm. "Whatever, I got this." 2-3k rpm, it kinda complains. After 3, it's like: ok, you want a redline? Here you go.

It's really interesting. I really wish it were a real manual.

If I do this and I don't buy a CPO'd car, I would certainly purchase a warranty.

And no DCT's for me. Three pedals or GTFO.

How have you liked the Golf R? Is there anything in particular you don't like about it?

Oh, it's a great car. It's not an M3 of course, but it is a great car in its own right. AWD, lots of space, high level of german refinement, feels light and possible, and I good power. I'd pick it over an Evo any time.

The only thing I don't like is that I waste too much time looking at mods for it =P It's an addiction, really.

I see. The Golf R would be at the top of my list if I had to choose only one car to use as an only car. I think it has a great blend of practicality and fun.

Have you modded the Golf R at all? I've been teasing myself with getting one for a few months now, but I've always debated whether there is enough power so looking at APR was natural. I don't know if I'd have the guts to screw with the warranty.

Ahem - the S65 factory redline is 8,500. Yes, those last 200 count =)

And then a little bit of exhaust tinkering (I have the same muffler as this guy but not the middle section...yet):

And for good measure, here is Leh Keen driving his E92 at Roebling Road and passing a 911 (cup?)

Funnily enough, your line of thinking is exactly how I ended up with my 1M.

I was looking for a new M3, preferably a coupe with 3 pedals but I would have definitely taken a 4-door and would have at least looked at a 'vert. I went to the biggest dealer in the area who had 6 on their website (most with no indication of transmission). All DCT. When I was leaving, the salesman said "what about the 1M" - I thought they were all sold, but nope, one was sitting right on the showroom.

A few miles of smiles and some sideways test drive action later, it was mine.

The Golf R is a great car and has LOTS of potential to tinker with it. The V8 in the E92 M3 is a whole other ballgame. My next car will be upgrading from a Mk5 Jetta (current car) to an E46 330i ZHP or E46 M3.

Funny how things work out some time :) I wasn't even seriously interested in the M3. I went with a friend to look at Mini Coopers (she wanted to bring me along for my opinion), and I said if only we go to the BMW dealer across the street afterwards. We end up at the BMW dealer and while I was looking at the M3's, the salesman came out and was more than happy to let me drive one...well actually two of them: a 6MT sedan and a DCT coupe (it was a slow sunday). I drove each for over a half hour including lots of aggressive backroad driving.

I went from not really interested in an M3 to really wanting one.

Not heavily modified, but it is not stock.

GIAC Stage 1, Neuspeed P-Flo, Black Forest Industries Catch Can, P3Cars vent gauge, soundaktor delete, exhaust flapper mod. It's got right under 40k on it and I did a cam follower replacement at 37k.

If I keep it it will soon be Stage 2.

Yup. And now that you've got the sickness, good luck getting rid of it.

Acceptance is your best bet. I got mine June 2012.
